Ekphrasis
Feels as if days have passed, but the room still stays the same
Able access to my limbs; I still feel hindered to move
The lacrimal flood gates have broken, flooding my space
Refusing to flood the world, I freeze the front door shut
With the knowledge of harming a loved one
A car accident was not needed;
This is enough to paralyze me from my needs
Colder in feeling, lighter in weight, paler in color
As I disperse more and more into this lacrimal lake
Wide awake in thought
My responsibilities float into my eyes; reminding me of their expiration
Feels as if days have passed
But how much deeper can the lake get?
Justification
I chose a photograph taken by Gregory Crewdson to create an ekphrasis about. While this art piece does not have a name, it depicts Ophelia from the famous play, Hamlet, as she drowns. I decided to give the photograph my own depiction based on how I viewed it, along with my own feelings. My interpretation utilizes the similar somber feelings you get from looking at the original photograph. Ophelia drowning was a sad event, so you can see how that links to the sad tone to my interpretation. Unlike the original, my interpretation does not involve death, but the sadness one feels after wronging a loved one. It adds to the idea that the person in the picture was alive but just felt unable to move. The essential details of the work include; despair and loss, which are also key ideas in my ekphrasis.
